Control System Design for Processing Plant

Control System Design for Processing Plant

Bespoke electrical design to facilitate product handling

Designing control systems come with challenges and even more so when they need to be installed and function in hazardous environments.

Delta Rock were awarded the contract to design and build a bespoke control system for a processing plant in Denmark.

The system is for a global player and a leading specialist in the decarbonization technologies, for the chemical and refining industries. They are perfecting solutions to assist their customers transition towards the use of renewable energy resources.

Control panel design

This project required the design and manufacture of multiple control panels. These panels will be the central intelligent system to manage the handling of liquid product transfer at this facility.

The bespoke electrical control system design had several factors to consider to suit the operating needs of the plant. Working in phased stages the first phase of control panels are currently being assembled at Delta Rock’s manufacturing workshop, located at Deeside UK.

From concept, to design and manufacture

Owing to the nature of the plant operations, Delta needed to consider and design the system to suit a hazardous environment.

The electrical design for this project needed to comply with IEC60079 – Explosive Atmosphere regulations. This regulation concerns the classification of areas where flammable gas or vapour hazards may arise.

Designing for hazardous areas

In the design and manufacturing of electrical infrastructure for hazardous areas, careful consideration must be given to many technical aspects. These technical aspects include the area and instrument classification, segregation and cable type use, and circuit placement. These aspects are particularly critical due to the volatile nature of such (hazardous) environments.

The elements of this project included:

    • Bespoke electrical design
    • Full technical concept and manufacturing drawings
    • Design compliance: IEC 60079 – Explosive Atmosphere regulations
    • Management of hazardous area specific calculations
    • Management of hazardous area specific documentation
    • Control panel design and manufacture

After completing the initial design stage of this project, we are now manufacturing the various control panels, for this project.

Managing Director, Gareth Hitchmough quotes, “This is an interesting project for Delta Rock to be involved with, especially working with an international business. The project also illustrates our range of in-house expertise. From developing a bespoke electrical control panel system, to considering the hazardous environment, through to the manufacturing of control panels.”

Gareth continues, “We were pleased to have been recommended for this project. A key contributor was because Delta Rock could offer the necessary skills to support the project from design to manufacture. Our expertise in designing and working in hazardous environments was also a critical factor. With the damaging effects of fossil fuel reliance, it’s fantastic to be able to support this facility that is helping to make a difference”.

Driving operational efficiencies with control panel system design and manufacture

Delta Rock continues to work at the forefront of the automation revolution, supporting a variety of industries, from Food and Beverage to Chemical Plants.

With our wealth of in-house expertise and experience, including hazardous areas, we are driving forward innovation, efficiencies and quality to ensure businesses remains competitive and safe.

If your business is keen to update or redevelop your control systems, our team are on hand to discuss your requirements to help you streamline your operations.
