Developing our teams’ skills
The expertise of the Delta Rock team, is something we are very proud of, along with how many of our apprentices grow and develop into skilled, valuable members of our growing business.
Starting as an apprentice, back in 2018, Matt has progressed through Delta Rock to the position of Control Systems Design Engineer. This current role sees Matt responsible for electrical panel and control panel design, managed by our extremely talented and experienced Technical Manager, Michal. Matt also oversees the production of control panel systems within the Delta Rock workshop facility.
Apprentice – switching focus
It was during his apprenticeship with Delta Rock that Matt became more interested in the automation engineering side of the business. Illustrating his interest and aptitude for this he was given the opportunity to work in Delta’s control panel workshop, under the supervision of our Technical Manager (Michal), During this time Matt began to learn about control panel systems, wiring and the build of them.
Once gaining initial understanding and skills, Matt was provided with the offer of changing his apprenticeship to Control Systems Design Engineering. Matt jumped at the chance.
After successfully graduating from his apprenticeship, Matt continued in the control panel design and soon became competent in designing electrical systems, to meet customer specifications.
Delta Rock encourages continuous personal development
Matt continued to grow his skills and expertise in PLC (Programmable Logic Controllers) software development. To further Matt’s expertise and support the growth of Delta Rock’s capabilities, Matt undertook his HNC Electrical and Electronic Technology at Deeside College.
Supported by his manager, Michal, Matt has successfully grown his knowledge, expertise and capabilities in PLC, project management, from initial concept, to design sign-off and commissioning.
After passing his HNC (in Electrical and Electronic Technology), Matt has become a valuable member of the automation team.
Broadening Skills
Based upon the type of work Delta Rock is involved with and hazardous areas in which we operate in and design for, Matt has since taken and passed his Compex Design Ex12 qualification. This is an excellent qualification to support Matt in application design engineering.
Compex Design Ex12 is a competency-based certification for application design engineers, who work with electrical equipment in hazardous areas. The qualification ensures engineers design and select the right equipment in accordance with IEC 60079-14
Keeping Safe in the Workplace
Supporting the focus on safe and competent design, Matt also passed his SSSTS certification.
A nationally recognised course that helps supervisors understand their health, safety, welfare, and environmental responsibilities, in the workplace.
Matt continuous passion for constant improvement and development emulates with Delta Rock’s values. We are always keen to support progression and individual growth.
The inquisitive mind and passion
It was quick to see Matt’s determination to learn and progress from the early stages of joining Delta Rock as an apprentice.
Like many engineers, Matt had a keenness for problem-solving and understanding how things worked from a young age. Dismantling something and then putting it back together again, not always successfully(!) was a constant pastime in his younger years.
With a best friend at his side, at the age of nine they built a remote-controlled car together.
A passion and interest for mountain biking, including maintenance and building bikes over-flowed into his school options of Design Technology, which was a firm favourite. Once gaining his GCSEs, it was a natural progression to study engineering at college, which led to the applying onto Delta Rock’s apprenticeship scheme.
Keen interest outside work
On finishing college, Matt’s passion of mountain biking resulted in being offered a place on the team for the Super One Series (British Karting Championship). This role saw him undertake official duties and assisting in the running of the series, travelling across the UK.
Matt hasn’t lost that initial passion and still enjoys spending his spare time mountain biking. In addition to this he loves walking his dog, supporting his rugby team: St Helens and his more recently found passion of skiing!
Apprenticeship Advocate
On asking Matt his thoughts on his career path so far, he said, “I would highly recommend an apprenticeship, especially to anyone aiming to work in the engineering sector. I was extremely lucky to gain mine with Delta Rock. They have constantly supported me in growing my skills and when realising my interest, allowed me to move into the automation side of the business”.
He continues, “I really enjoy the varied work undertaken at Delta Rock. The role I have offers challenges, which I love and I continue to develop my skills and broaden my knowledge. I am lucky to be surrounded by a supportive team and have mentors who continue to help me improve my knowledge. The environment at Delta Rock is great, working with such a supportive team”.
Delta Rock – an expert team
Matt as a highly motivated, enthusiastic and capable individual and is valuable member in control panel and automation team at Delta Rock. He continues to make a significant contribution to the on-going success and growth of Delta Rock in automation system developments.
