The UK Engineering Crisis
According to Society of Operations Engineering the UK faces a shortfall of 1 million engineers by 2030. An alarming statistic.
This reinforces the reason why Delta Rock are passionate about Apprenticeships. We want to ensure the UK is supported with well-trained and knowledgeable electrical and automation engineers for our future. Nurtured through our apprenticeship programmes we are helping to create the next generations of engineers.
Meeting Our Future Engineers
It was during Delta Rock exhibiting at Coleg Cambria’s apprenticeship fair that Louis first noticed the business.
Displaying a control panel, Louis was curious about what this was, how it formed part of electrical engineering and what Delta Rock did. Engaging with the team to understand more about electrical and automation engineering inspired Louis to look further at an electrical apprenticeship.
The Appeal of Delta Rock
Louis concept of electrical engineering was general domestic electricians. He had never thought about industrial electrical engineering and hadn’t linked automation and control panel system design with it.
Automation is used extensively within the various manufacturing industrial sectors, which also needs qualified electrical engineers.
Having the opportunity to work in industrial settings, and gain skills and knowledge of automation engineering and control panel design was something that provided more depth and opportunities for Louis and a key driver in pushing forward with his application to Delta Rock.
The Journey Begins
Following his A levels, which were very science orientated, Louis also gained work experience with an electrical contractor, which saw him work in agricultural and domestic installations.
Louis newfound interest in automation and his previous experience in technical theory, alongside his work experience added extra support to his application to Delta Rock’s apprenticeship scheme.
Following his application and successful interview, Louis was offered a place on Delta Rock’s apprenticeship, which enables him to take his first steps in following his goal of becoming a fully qualified electrical engineer.
Being Part of Delta Rock Apprenticeship
Following the initial meeting the office team, who manage the projects and customer contracts, Louis joined the other apprentices in undertaken their Health and Safety training.
After that, Louis didn’t have to wait long before he found himself gaining his first on-site experience. He has since worked on multiple sites for some of Delta Rock’s most prestigious clients and projects. Under the watchful eye of experienced team mentors, who support his training, providing guidance on skill development and knowledge.
Already, Louis has been involved with the installation of a power feed to a transformer room. This required particular detail on the application of earthing and banding. Louis said “I am really proud of this piece of work. It is a stand-out moment for me to work on something myself, overseen by my mentors and pleased to say I did a good job”.
Louis continues to gain skills and knowledge, working alongside his experienced colleagues installing electrical containment: trunking, ladder rack, and basket.
College and On-site Experience Balance
As with all apprentices Louis’ apprenticeship will be split between learning the theory of electrical installation and application, by attending college once a week and working on-site alongside our qualified and experienced team. On-site our apprentices gain vital real-life work experience, and valuable knowledge from their mentors.
With the range of industries Delta Rock supports, Louis and all apprentices gain an array of skills and crucial knowledge of electrical engineering and working in industrial settings. This supports putting the theory into practice.
Planning ahead
Building up his portfolio to support his growth and skill development, Louis will be able to submit a full range of evidence to illustrate his expertise to date, to support his progression to move forward into his second year.
With the end of the year approaching Louis will shortly be taking his initial tests, which forms part of his college course and involves a science theory exam, and electrical theory test.
The future looks bright for Louis
Louis is enjoying his apprenticeship and pleased with his progress and really enthused to get involved with the electrical control panels side of Delta Rock’s business. With in-house automation design engineers and control panel manufacturing, Louis will be able to develop his knowledge supported by the Delta Rock team.
Many Talents
Louis continues to illustrate his capabilities and commitment to progress his skills and knowledge.
Not only is he developing his electrical engineering abilities, but he has recently taught himself Italian! After just a few weeks Louis is already conversing with the Italian customers that Delta Rock are currently working with.
With his excellent progression so far, which has been noted by his managers, we are sure Louis will continue to progress, and support the much needed engineering skills for the future.
