Meet the Apprentice – Our Future Engineers

Our Future Electrical Engineers

Meet Wilson: Our apprentice, whose journey onto our apprenticeship has not followed the usual path

Originally from Hong Kong, Wilson was encouraged to pursue his education in business studies and economics. In Hong Kong this is a popular profession young people are guided into. In addition to his studies, Wilson had a keen interest in baseball and spent five years coaching a local team. He loved this, but realised this wouldn’t be a long-term career, especially as baseball is an uncommon sport in his home country.

The experience that captivated an interest

Beyond baseball, Wilson enjoyed spending time with his grandfather. A truck driver by profession, Wilson’s grandfather had very practical skills and knowledge in vehicle and engine maintenance. Skills that where invaluable in ensuring his truck remained in top condition. Wilson loved to get involved and work in a more hands-on and practical way. Continuing to work with his grandfather in his spare time, Wilson developed his practical skills and gained an array of practical knowledge. This interest led him to review his future career path.

Focusing on a new career path

The new interest and passion in seeking another career led Wilson to shift from business studies and economics to an electrical-related profession. However, this wasn’t as easy in Hong Kong. This pushed Wilson to look further afield. On discovering apprenticeships offered in the UK, Wilson at the age of 28, along with his family decided to move to the UK.

The big move

After a lot of research, Wilson was keen to obtain an electrical apprenticeship, however, this came with numerous hurdles for him. Finding a possible avenue Wilson enrolled in Trade Skills for 4U. This is a programme designed to help aspiring electricians achieve their goals.

Limited options meant that Wilson had to ‘self-fund’ the programme. Obviously, Wilson was willing to do this, so he could progress and reach his goal. The programme provided him with the essential theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to perform electrical work safely and to UK industry standards.

After a year of study, Wilson successfully completed and gained his NVQ Level 2 in Electrical Installation. The course broadened his understanding of the electrical industry, allowing him to focus on areas that aligned with his interests and newfound skillset.

Skills to move forward with

With his NVQ Level 2 qualification, Wilson had the confidence and foundational skills to look for a position within an electrical engineering business. Impressed by his hard work and self-motivation to study for his qualification, Delta Rock offered Wilson a position as ‘labourer’, which would see him work alongside the qualified team, to further hone his skills and knowledge.

Specialising in industrial electrical engineering, Delta Rock electricians work across a range of industry settings, which requires slightly different and additional knowledge and skills to working in the commercial field.

The next step to reach Electrician status

Whilst at Delta Rock, Wilson has illustrated his capability and eagerness to continue to learn and dedication to progress further to become a qualified electrician.

This determination has led Delta Rock in supporting Wilson to progress under their apprenticeship scheme. He is now studying for his NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Installation, which involves one day a week at Coleg Cambria. On successful completion Wilson will be a qualified electrician.

An electric future ahead

From his commitment and determination to date and how he has grown his skills and progressed working in real-life project environments on various sites, Wilson is set for a promising future.

Wilson said, “I really enjoy the challenge of working on site in a variety of industries, and so pleased to have been given the opportunity by Delta Rock to progress in achieving my electrical qualifications. I am particularly interested in the control panel installations that Delta Rock design and manufacture in their head-office workshop. I’m looking forward to finishing my apprenticeship and progressing further”.
